Research Experience
My research focused on the utilization of pretreated lignocellulosic biomass, Oil Palm Empty Fruit Bunch (OPEFB), as a medium for lipid production by the oleaginous yeast Rhodotorula toruloides. In this research, I applied solid-state fermentation using the white-rot fungus Marasmiellus sp. for the pretreatment of OPEFB. Post-pretreatment, lipid production by R. toruloides using the pretreated OPEFB medium was conducted under various feeding conditions to optimize lipid yield. To analyze the lipid yield produced, I employed the Folch method for lipid extraction, ensuring accurate quantification of the produced lipid. This research demonstrated the feasibility of utilizing pretreated OPEFB as an alternative substrate for sustainable lipid production, contributing to the development of bioproducts derived from agro-industrial waste.
Skills
Microbial Cultivation, Bioprocess Optimization, Lipid Extraction, Enzyme Activity Assay, UV-Vis spectrophotometry
