Research Experience
The use of antibiotics, which was regarded as the golden standard of bacterial infection management in shrimp for years, has been limited and banned due to its negative effects to human and environment. Therefore, we developed new approach to supress bacterial infection in shrimp aquaculture using bacteriophage, a virus specifically infecting certain bacteria. We isolated potential bacteriophages with antagonistic properties againts shrimp pathogen and characterized their properties using standard tests. The selected phages were challenged against batch-cultured shrimp previously infected with pathogenic bacteria to assess their ability in supressing shrimp disease. Best-performed phages were determined, ready for further assessment and bigger scale trial.
Skills
Microbiology Testing and Analysis (Isolation, Cultivation, Identification, Enumeration, Good Laboratory Practices), DNA/RNA Extraction, PCR, Gel-Electrophoresis, Shrimp Rearing, Good Aquaculture Practice, and basic bioinformatics software.
